Welcome to my orchid page!
It is November and therefore time to update my site again. I'm finalizing my new shop and also have added a few new links. Check out this month's website tip! It will give you great insight on how to improve the growth of your orchids by optimizing the fertilizer level and the pH of your potting mix.

How to use a Light Meter 1330B

The Light Meter 1330B (or Nicety Lightmeter LM802) is an inexpensive, but reliable light meter for the hobby or professional orchid grower. It can also be used for any other plant, to germinate seeds, in nuseries or whereever a light measurement is needed. It can be used to measure light levels outdoors, in the greenhouse or under fluorescent and high pressure lamps. It can measure the light intensity either in lux or in footcandle.
This photo guide will show you how to use the light meter...

New: Orchid Shop

I have tracked down the manufacturers of some of the tools and supplies I use for my orchids. Initially I offer several digital meters to measure the light level, water quality and the temperature and humidity. Since I buy them directly from the manufacturer I can offer them for a very low price. Visit my orchid shop to check it out! I'm working on bringing you pots and potting media next.

Website Tip

Have you wondered if your orchids get the right amount of nitrogen and fertilizer? Is your orchid mix in a good condition that promotes growth? Or do you need to repot because minerals have accumulated and the pH is out of balance? EC and pH meters can help you to determine this. David Mellard describes how to use these instruments in a bulletin of the Atlanta Orchid Society.
Follow this link to an explanation on how to use EC and pH meters in orchid growing .

Hwra 'Lava Burst'

This is another frequent

bloomer in my collection.
I bought the plant from a local gardencenter in July and it bloomed until the end of August. To my big surprise it started growing a new spike in December and it bloomed in early January and then again in May. I'm currently looking for a good partner to cross it with. Perhaps an oncidium?
