The quality of your water is extremely important for the health of your orchids. In nature they receive very pure rain water. Tap and well water on the other hand contain a lot of minerals. This digital TDS meter measures the mineral content of your water. TDS stands for "Total Dissolved Solids". For most orchids the TDS should be below 120 ppm. Hard water with a TDS above 120 can clog the pores and the minerals can "burn" the roots.
The TDS of you water can change depending on season and source of your water supply.
If your tap water is "hard" and you therefore have been using filtered or distilled water the TDS meter can even help you save money: Say your tap water has a TDS of 200 and your filtered water has a TDS of 0. Then you can mix one gallon of tap water with one gallon of filtered water and you will get two gallons of water with a TDS of 100, which is perfectly fine for most of your orchids.
